Love in the Face of Terror

I think many of us feel that the idea of a light and dark side of the Force is an apt metaphor for the human condition. It also seems appropriate to see the undulations of these two sides of the Force as strengthening and weakening over time. One question is: what is our role in this shifting of energies both individually and collectively? Do our thoughts and actions strengthen the light or the dark?

As healers we usually focus our ministrations on helping individuals, couples and families heal the effects of trauma and other challenges. Trauma’s most enduring power is that it tempts us to turn away from love, not notice the light and turn toward the dark side.

During the last few months of 2015 there appears to have been a large swell of energy toward fear and hatred, catalyzed by the Paris bombings. Individuals and collectives need to be able to regulate their affect. And as Yoda said to Luke “Fear and anger to the dark side they lead.”

During this time period, I wrote a piece of music that would not turn into a song. But when I started reflecting on these issues, all of a sudden I found myself playing the music and words began pouring out. It was as if the music was waiting for the right intention.

So on the last day of 2015, I share the song with you. It is somewhere between a lullaby, a prayer and an anthem. It continues to be a privilege and a pleasure to be part of ACEP, connected with all of you who intend to be agents for the light! Happy New Year.

Love in the Face of Terror

They try to sow hatred     in our hearts.
They try to sow fear           in our souls.
They try to replace           the light with dark.
We cannot let them     achieve their goals.

Stay true       to the love inside.
Stay true       to the light in you.
Stay true       to the bonds that abide.
Let that light shine through.

They create horror – the news obliges.
Don’t keep your eyes fixed on them.
Remember to look around
See all the good there is.
We’re all connected in the end.

Stay true       to the love inside.
Stay true       to the light in you.
Stay true       to the bonds that abide.
Let that light shine through.

They use atrocity to terrorize
To make us hide or flee or fight.
But in the end     evil will lose
When we keep our humanity in sight.

Stay true       to the love inside.
Stay true       to the light in you.
Stay   true     to the bonds that abide.
Keep that light shining through.

  1. Bob,
What a wonderful song! I’ve already shared it on my Facebook page. I hope that you perform it at the ACEP convention!

  2. “Trauma’s most enduring power is that it tempts us to turn away from love, not notice the light and turn toward the dark side.” What a powerful statement. Your piece is a great meditation, Bob. Thanks.

    • Thanks Peter. Most people think that the problem with trauma is the immediate damage. I see it more in terms that it invites us to cut off from or turn away from our resources, especially each other and of course the light side of the Force.

  3. Thanks for this Robert, will share

  4. Bob this is truly inspired. I would love to see this song become more mainstream, or at least circulate in conscious circles. Do you have any connections to do that?
