(by Robert Schwarz, PsyD and Sonja Lyubomirsky, PhD)
Don’t worry, be happy. That’s what the song says. But what are the secrets to creating happiness? Do you know how to create them in your life? Do you know how to help clients increase their happiness? (Other than working on removing blocks and negative emotions to upsetting events – which is a good start).
Removing blocks and impediments are a key factor in helping clients. But we need strategies to create life skills and life habits that increase the chance of generating positive emotions for ourselves and our clients.
Are some strategies better than others? Who would know such a thing? How about a person who does research on happiness? We have just such a person presenting a keynote at our annual energy psychology conference. Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky has been doing research on happiness for many years. She has written two books on the subject, The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want (2008) and her latest book, The Myths of Happiness: What Should Make You Happy, but Doesn’t, What Shouldn’t Make You Happy, but Does (2104).
In this brief 7 minute interview she gives us a brief glimpse into what she will be discussing at the conference. Be sure to check out minute 5:13, where Sonja makes a shocking declaration that flies in the face of conventional knowledge.
